السلام عليكم و رحمة الله وبركاته
It seems that the most underrated aspect of an appearance of a Muslim from his clothes to the beard is the mustache. We’ve all heard the importance of the beard and finally rid ourselves of the face that it was “sunnah” and not obligatory. Let’s look at the heart of it all:
“Let the beard grow, and trim the mustache.” al-Bukhaari (5442)
As you can see the mustache is EQUALLY IMPORTANT as the beard. But you see a lot of Muslims with a beard along with a mustache. Lets look at some common combinations:
1. No beard or mustache: This combination is very common especially among the youth. While the fact about shaving/trimming the mustache goes both ways, the absence of a beard is a direct disobedience.
2. No beard BUT a mustache: The worst combo possible. Not only is this an imitation of the Kuffar (mainly Jews). This is a double- disobedient act of the hadith mentioned above.
“Whoever does not remove anything from the moustache is not one of us.” Narrated by al-Tirmidhi (26853).
3. A beard and NO mustache: This is how it’s done properly. This is following the Sunnah. This is how you love the Prophet peace be upon him more than yourself by submitting one of our most cherished body part to the law of Islam.
“He set us a time limit of no more than forty days for trimming the moustache, clipping the nails, plucking the armpit hairs and shaving the pubic hair.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 10/284 and Muslim, 1/222).
